The first of two Omni cohorts, meant to diversify the participants in the Framingham Heart Study, are enrolled.

In contrast to the preceding cohorts, the Omni 1 cohort contains no participants of European American ancestry. Instead 507 people of African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and other backgrounds are enrolled. A second Omni cohort in 2003 enrolls 410 more ethnicially and racially diverse participants, some of whom are related to the first Omni cohort.
